Pelvic Organ Prolapse
The diagnosis of prolapse often causes anxiety and distress. Symptoms of heaviness, bulging, a lump at the vaginal entrance and altered bladder and bowel function can also add to the negative experience of this diagnosis. Pelvic floor and core rehabilitation is often an effective treatment for the symptoms of prolapse.
Normal Pelvic Organ Anatomy
The anatomy of your pelvic region should be functional. Meaning that the organs of the bladder, bowel and womb should be able to work properly without the negative effects of pressure.
Reasons for Prolapse
When the intra-abdominal pressure rises and the support around the pelvic organs reduces, prolapse can occur. There are various risk factors for prolapse, it's not always down to one cause.
Treatment Options
The diagnosis of pelvic organ prolapse does not mean an inevitable path to surgery. The symptoms are often managed with pelvic floor and core rehabilitation, vaginal inserts such as pessaries and vaginal lubrication.
Will I require surgical intervention?
Not necessarily! There is plenty of evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training, improved breathing dynamics and improved posture on the management of pelvic organ prolapse symptoms. The aim of treatment is to reduce the symptoms so that you are not aware of them on a day to day basis, during exercise or activity.
